Primary and Secondary waves
There are two kinds of waves produced by earthquakes: S and P waves. Primary (p) wave- travels greatest length & speed, and pushes particles in front of or behind the wave. These waves are felt first. Secondary (s) wave- travels slower than p waves, displaces particles at right angles to the wave. The primary waves are recorded first on a seismogram, but have a smaller magnitude than secondary waves.
