Tates Creek High STLP

The Student Technology Leaders (STLs) at Tates Creek High School work with the IMMEX liaison every Wednesday to develop problems sets. The large number of students interested in the project coupled with the fact that not every student can attend every meeting presents a few organizational challenges. Still, the program has been quite successful as the students have produced high-quality work.

One thing that was done to make the process more manageable was to divide the students into teams. Small groups of students adopt a particular section of a problem set – typically one of the main menu selections – and work together to design a layout for that section. This includes deciding how to present the information onscreen and creating the graphics and/or animations needed. As their work progresses, updates are posted on the STLP web page for other members of their team and other teams to see. This way every student involved in the project can see how the project is progressing on all fronts.

An added bonus of having current work-in-progress posted on the STLP web page is the web site serves as an online backup. Recently the USB flash drive containing all the files for the current problem set was stolen from Mr. Gill’s classroom. Since most of the files also appear on the STLP web page, a major disaster was averted.
The students who went through the summer training session serve as the leaders/coordinators of the project. They help develop the overall interface and the ‘look and feel’ of the problem. These students then work with each subgroup to ensure a consistent user interface and a seamless problem set. Once all the images are created and the layout of each page designed, actual creation of the web pages needed for the problem set begins.
