Academic Expectation 1.12: Students speak using appropriate forms, conventions, and styles to communicate ideas and information to different audiences for different purposes (expressing opinions, ideas and feelings, storytelling, drama, poetry, discussions, presentations, readers’ theater, debates, etc.).

Students will:

·1 answer simple "yes/no" questions.

·2 speak in complete sentences.

·3 use speech that is understood by most people in their environment.

·4 answer open-ended questions (e.g., "what did you do at school today?, tell me about…).

·5 retell a story, parts of stories, or an event.

·6 use many types of sentences to express needs and thoughts, and to give or ask for information.

·7 participate appropriately in conversations (e.g., turn-taking, staying on topic).

·8 show interest in and initiate conversation.

·9 engage in informal communication.

Academic Expectation 1.1 Students use reference tools such as dictionaries, almanacs, encyclopedias, and computer reference programs and research tools such as interviews and surveys to find the information they need to meet specific demands, explore interests, or solve specific problems.

Students will:

·1 pose questions to obtain ideas and information for authentic purposes.

·2 identify research tools.

Academic Expectation 1.16 Students use computers and other kinds of technology to collect, organize, and communicate information and ideas.

Students will:

·1 explore and use technology to access ideas and information for authentic tasks.

Speaking/Listening/Observing

Academic Expectation 1.12: Students speak using appropriate forms, conventions, and styles to communicate ideas and information to different audiences for different purposes (expressing opinions, ideas and feelings, storytelling, drama, poetry, discussions, presentations, readers’ theater, debates, etc.).

Students will:

·1 answer more complex "yes/no" questions.

·2 produce all English sounds with understandable speech.

·3 tell and retell stories and events in a logical order.

·4 express ideas with a variety of complete sentences.

·5 use most parts of speech (grammar) correctly.

·6 ask and respond to "wh" questions in small group settings (who, what, where, why, when).

·7 stay on topic and take turns in conversation.

·8 give directions.

·9 initiate conversations.

·10 practice appropriate verbal behaviors for a variety of audiences, purposes, and situations.

Academic Expectation 1.12: Students speak using appropriate forms, conventions, and styles to communicate ideas and information to different audiences for different purposes (expressing opinions, ideas and feelings, storytelling, drama, poetry, discussions, presentations, readers’ theater, debates, etc.).

Students will:

·1 answer more complex "yes/no" questions.

·2 produce all English sounds using speech that is understood by unfamiliar listeners.

·3 ask and answer "wh" questions (e.g., who, what, when, where, why).

·4 use increasingly complex sentence structures in oral communications.

·5 clarify and explain words and ideas.

·6 give directions with 3-4 steps.

·7 use oral language for different purposes: to inform, to persuade, to entertain.

·8 stay on topic, take turns, and use appropriate eye contact during conversation.

·9 open and close conversation appropriately.

·1 practice appropriate verbal behaviors for a variety of audiences, purposes and situations.

·10 apply appropriate nonverbal techniques (e.g., gestures, facial expressions) to enhance communication.

·11 present information using appropriate delivery techniques (e.g., rate, tone, volume).

·5 apply listening skills for a variety of purposes.

Students will:

·4 summarize main points.

·5 report about information gathered in group activities.

·6 adjust communication based on audience, purpose, and situation.

·7 prepare and deliver formal presentations individually and/or collaboratively for specific audiences, purposes, and situations, with and without technology and visual aids.

·8 use appropriate delivery techniques including correct and appropriate language, nonverbal cues, and visual aids.
