Glossary of Terms

Science Process Vocabulary—Science process skills are basic to the science program and are appropriate tools for use in other subject areas. As students acquire these skills in science, they also develop critical thinking and reasoning skills. Science process skills cannot be developed by simply reading about science; they are learned by actively engaging in planned science activities. Science Process Vocabulary words follow a recommended age-appropriate sequence.(Please see "Science Process Skills" page 5 for definitions.)

Science Content Vocabulary—Science content vocabulary is used during or following scientific investigation. It is useful in preparing children to read about science following hands-on experiences. Lists are not comprehensive, but provide a basic guideline.

Assessment—Open-ended questions are to be used following science investigations. Questions are based on Core Content for Science Assessment and incorporate science content, concepts, and process vocabulary, as well as critical thinking and reasoning.

Extensive—Student provides fully developed response which includes supporting, relevant details that are accurate and appropriate, vocabulary and concepts from the discipline are used, and connections to the real world are made when appropriate.

Appropriate—Student provides response that includes support or justification, relevant details, and demonstrates an understanding of concepts and vocabulary. Occasional inaccuracies, which do not interfere with conceptual understanding, may be present.

Basic—Student provides partial response, which is limited in either accuracy or explanation, and which demonstrates limited understanding of the vocabulary and concepts.

Minimal—Student demonstrates little understanding of concepts and vocabulary. Response includes inaccuracies, misconceptions, and little or no explanation.
