Informational Reading
HIGH SCHOOL READING EXIT
PERFORMANCE STANDARD 1: Student will make sense of a
variety of grade level appropriate informational materials.
(Informational materials include selections from scientific and
cultural journals, feature article, news article, biography,
autobiography, primary source material.) |

IR9.1 Use
illustrations, charts, lists, tables, graphs, tables of contents,
indexes, glossaries, headings, signal words, and captions to add to
the understanding of the text.
IR9.2 Make predictions
and draw conclusions based on 9th grade passages.
IR9.3 Recognize the
main idea and give an accurate summary of a passage.
IR9.4 Recognize
organizational patterns: cause and effect, compare and contrast,
sequences and generalizations
IR9.5 Apply textual
information to solve problems and respond to authentic situations.
IR9.6 Differentiate
concrete and abstract terms. |
Literary Reading
HIGH SCHOOL READING EXIT
PERFORMANCE STANDARD 2: Student will make sense of a
variety of grade level appropriate literary materials. (Literary
materials include: short stories, novels, essays, poetry, and plays
consisting of classical and modern texts and representing both
historical and cultural perspectives.) |

interpret the meaning of 9th grade literary passages.
LR9.2 Draw conclusions
based on the text.
LR9.3 Paraphrase
important parts of a passage.
LR9.4 Differentiate
between literal and non-literal meanings.
LR9.5 Recognize how
the conflict creates suspense and structures the plot.
LR9.6 Recognize direct
and indirect characterization; static, dynamic, flat, round, and
stereotyped characters.
LR9.7 Identify first
person, limited third, and omniscient points of view in fiction.
LR9.8 Recognize the
effect of setting on works of literature.
LR9.9 Understand
sequencing of events.

important supporting details.

simile, metaphor, personification, alliteration, and onomatopoeia.

Persuasive Reading
HIGH SCHOOL READING EXIT
PERFORMANCE STANDARD 3: Student will make sense of a
variety of grade level appropriate persuasive materials. (Persuasive
materials includes whole texts and excerpts from materials such as
magazine and newspaper articles, brochures, letters, proposals,
speeches, editorials, electronic texts, essays, opinion columns, and
advertisements.) |

author’s position based on evidence in a passage.
PR9.2 Discern author’s
purpose.
PR9.3 Distinguish
between fact and opinion, realizing that opinion represents
differing views.
PR9.4 Compare and
contrast differing points of view in two or more passages.
PR9.5 Identify and
explain how types of persuasive techniques (e.g., logical reasoning,
examples, facts, statistics, language use, and emotional appeals)

Practical/Workplace Reading

PERFORMANCE STANDARD 4: Student will make sense of a
variety of grade level appropriate practical/workplace materials.
(Practical / workplace materials include: warranties, recipes,
forms, memoranda, consumer texts, and "how-to" manuals.) |

sequence of information.

format/layout (organizational aids and graphics) to interpret
