English III/11th Grade Reading Standards

Informational Reading

HIGH SCHOOL READING EXIT PERFORMANCE STANDARD 1: Student will make sense of a variety of grade level appropriate informational materials. (Informational materials include selections from scientific and cultural journals, feature article, news article, biography, autobiography, primary source material.)

IR11.1 Analyze predictions and draw conclusions based on 11th grade passages.

IR11.2 Recognize and analyze information for generalizations, logical reasoning, and propaganda techniques.

IR11.3 Recognize and analyze logical fallacies and emotional appeals.

Literary Reading

HIGH SCHOOL READING EXIT PERFORMANCE STANDARD 2: Student will make sense of a variety of grade level appropriate literary materials. (Literary materials include: short stories, novels, essays, poetry, and plays consisting of classical and modern texts and representing both historical and cultural perspectives.)

LR11.1 Understand and interpret the meaning of 11th grade literary passages

LR11.2 Understand the influence of major literary movements and periods.

LR11.3 Interpret idiomatic, symbolic, and poetic language, including analogy and metaphor.

LR11.4 Critique word choice, style, content, and literary elements.

LR11.5 Identify and analyze ambiguous and contradictory statements in passages.

LR11.6 Understand vocabulary in context.

Persuasive Reading

HIGH SCHOOL READING EXIT PERFORMANCE STANDARD 3: Student will make sense of a variety of grade level appropriate persuasive materials. (Persuasive materials includes whole texts and excerpts from materials such as magazine and newspaper articles, brochures, letters, proposals, speeches, editorials, electronic texts, essays, opinion columns, and advertisements.)

PR11.1 Analyze a variety of persuasive and propaganda techniques and explain how they are used in advertisements and campaigns.

PR11.2 Evaluate the persuasiveness of editorial writing.

Practical/Workplace Reading

HIGH SCHOOL READING EXIT PERFORMANCE STANDARD 4: Student will make sense of a variety of grade level appropriate practical/workplace materials. (Practical / workplace materials include: warranties, recipes, forms, memoranda, consumer texts, and "how-to" manuals.)

WR11.1 Analyze technical articles for purpose, organizational patterns, clarity, reliability, accuracy, and relevancy of information.

WR11.2 Apply analytical reading skills to make connections to practical/workplace setting.
