Open Response Question #2

Academic Expectation 2.37: Students demonstrate skills and work habits that lead to success in future schooling and work.

Organizing Standard: Positive and negative work habits impact success.

As an employer of a local insurance office, you are in need of a part-time office assistant. You have decided to write a letter to the high school counselor requesting student applicants. The job duties for this position include: answering the telephone, filing documents, data entry, using email for internal and external office communications, and following directions from superiors. The hours for this position are Monday through Friday 3:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.

Using a business letter format, identify three specific skills and three work habits needed to complete the duties for successful employment. In the body of the letter, explain why each skill you selected is important to the job.

Teachers:

The business letter format is not required for open response questions. Open response questions are designed to assess content knowledge. On the other hand, on-demand questions are designed to assess the quality of student writing (i.e there are four formats for on-demand questions: editorial, letter, written speech, and feature article). Although this question appears to overlap between the two types of questions, content knowledge is the primary focus. The vocational studies content being assessed is the six-parts of the letter. Note: Even though the students are asked to write a letter, students are scored on the correct usage of the components of the letter—not the quality of the letter.

Kind of Question: Two or more independent components

Format: Description

Open Response Question #3

Academic Expectation 2.36: Students use strategies for choosing and preparing for a career.

Organizing Standard: Many factors need to be considered when selecting and preparing for employment or a career path.

Each high school student should have an Individual Graduation Plan (IGP). The IGP provides an outline of your course schedule, career goals and interests. Based on the information contained in your IGP, re-examine your career choice. If you believe that you are still on "target", explain why the career you have chosen is still the best for you. Using your past performance and experience, give three reasons why this is so. However, if you find that the career you had chosen on the IGP is "not" your best choice anymore, analyze the information that you have available and make an alternative plan for a new career goal. Explain your new choice by listing three past performances and experiences that support your new selection.

Kind of Question: Student Choice
