Infectious Diseases

Introduction

You are a team of graphic artists, employed by an advertising company, assigned to publish a brochure on an infectious disease.  Each design team (2 members) must choose an infectious disease to research.

The Task

Your team is assigned the task of researching, designing, and creating a brochure on your disease.  Things to appear in your brochure include

Causes -- if caused by a virus or bacteria, scientific name of bacteria.  Other information about the bacteria or virus.

        History of the disease

Transmission -- how is the disease spread from person to person

    Symptoms

    Cures/treatments

    Other interesting information

Information for graph -- distribution in the U.S. or world, number of cases per year, areas/countries where the disease is found

The Process

To accomplish this task you should:

As a team

Decide which disease you will research

Research the disease you have chosen and take notes

Locate graphics (pictures, illustrations) to be downloaded and included in your brochure

Prepare a graph, based on your research, to be included in brochure

    Design and create a brochure

Prepare a bibliography of sources used

Learning Advice

Take careful notes as you do your research.  Be thorough.  Organize your brochure with an introduction, body, and conclusion.

Introduction -- present the topic and give some interesting background information, history of the disease

Body -- include definition of the disease is, how it is transmitted, symptoms, cures/treatments, other interesting information

    Conclusion -- preventive measures

Include section titles.  For example, when you discuss the symptoms, you might want to entitle that section, Symptoms.

Use the tri-fold design, with front cover including

    Title

Names of the members of your team

    Graphics -- pictures, illustrations

Include at least one other graphic plus a graph in body of brochure.

Proofread carefully for grammar, spelling, and/or punctuation errors.

Bibliography is to be turned in on a separate sheet of paper.

Evaluation

Your project will be evaluated on the following criteria:

     1.  Organization -- is there an introduction, body, and conclusion?

     2.  Is there indication of thorough research?  Lots of details.

     3.  Grammatically correct?

     4.  Use of graphics?

     5.  Overall appearance?

Conclusion

Having completed this WebQuest, you should have a good understanding of an infectious disease and how it could affect our lives today.
