Linlee
Elementary - How-To How To's

For 3 weeks, Bonnie Orthymeyer and her class at Linlee Elementary worked with their TRT on a Writing/Science unit. In just 30 minutes a day, the students reviewed and learned more about the parts of the plant and their functions, the parts of the seed, and planted a seed and observed its growth.

Meanwhile, students investigated "how-to" pieces (craft and recipes) online analyzing them using a check list to find out if the pieces had essential parts for a "how-to" piece. Students then used electronic graphic organizers to duplicate the teacher's "How-to Make a Peanut Butter Sandwich". Next, students drafted and published the information into a Word Template (found at www.fayette.k12.ky.us//trt18 ) that could be printed, folded and decorated as a brochure. After students planted their seeds, they followed the same procedure of using the graphic organizer and template to produce a brochure on "How-to plant a seed".

During the fourth week students will make seed planting kits out of bread bags, jello cups, soil and pinto beans. These kits along with "How-To" instructions will be given to the kindergarten class. Plans are being made for Ms. Orthymeyers second grade to produce a Power Point explaining the parts of the plant and their functions.

PowerPoint for Third-Graders

Lee Moureaux, 3rd grade teacher at Garden Springs Elementary, has planned to have her students master Microsoft PowerPoint this year. She had some experience with PowerPoint, but wanted to review and refine her skills. She attended an introductory PP class at Ambrose Lab with Mark DiMascio, and had several individual sessions with her district technology resource teacher, Jenni Keith. Lee created a template slide show on endangered species and an example show on Manatees. A SmartBoard introductory presentation in her classroom helped students begin to see what they would be creating. Collaboration with the library media specialist and the microcomputer specialist will help students to gather research and use the PP template to create their own slide show.

This project is the first of three PP presentations Lee's class will be creating this year. Each project will give the students more flexibility in creating their presentations as their skills using the program increase. Look for their completed projects on Mrs. Moureaux's class website, http://www.gardensprings.fayette.k12.ky.us/teachers/moureaux, in the near future.
