Millcreek Elementary School: Your View of the News

Tracy Warren teaches fifth grade at Millcreek Elementary. For a recent observation by her principal, Ms. Warren wanted to really get her kids into what's going on in the world around them. She took the students to the FCPS News webpage  and showed them how to locate articles of interest from the many online resources. The students read their particular article and crafted a reaction which they submitted to the site. You can see what the students wrote at the Reaction Page. Below are two reactions submitted by students. To help her class better understand the writing process, Ms. Warren developed a rubric which she used to assess their pieces - see below.

The rubric is available here in Word2000 format - right-click and select "Save target as..."

Christopher, Age 10 - An Underwater City: I think it is really cool that a team of explorers think they found an underwater city. They think it was built by an unknown human race 6,000 years ago. Some peppole have there doubts. Archaeological city could not survive such a disaster. This is his reason because other experts say that earth quakes caused it to be down there. I hope they find out weather its fake or real when they return next spring.

Drew, Age 10 - A Prehistoric Pompeii:  In the article I read it was talking about a 4,000 year old village in Italy, it was interesting because it told that was so old and that it was volcanically preserved for so many years. It was stumbled across when the city was planning on building a mall there. The city is not going to build the mall but dig up the village. Which I think is the best thing to do. They are also going to preserve it and turn it into a tourist attraction.
