Student Email! We've got it, let's use it!

At the most recent secondary Technology Resource Teacher meeting, the student use of email in instruction was discussed. It's a capability that exists right now in Fayette County, and it's just getting a good start! Below please find several ideas and resources to get you started, and some answers to anticipated questions or concerns. By now, almost every teacher in Fayette County is using email as his/her primary method of communication - the students shouldn't be far behind!

Here's some ideas and examples, some of which are already being used in classrooms in Fayette County:

ePALS Classroom ExchangeEmail around the globe: ePals provides a point of contact between teachers, classes, and clubs/organizations wishing to communicate electronically. It's world-wide! You list a description of your class or other organization, then browse the others there.

Document sharing: Attaching homework and other documents: Students have access to their email accounts through the Internet, hence, if they have access at home, they can send you their work! It's how us adults do it!

The Flat Stanley ProjectCollaborative projects: Story-telling or other assignments written in collaboration with other students off site, passing their work through attached document or in the email body itself! (See Flat Stanley below)

Ask Dr. MathAcademic interaction and help: Students can ask experts questions about issues, or get email hope with their homework!

Huh?
We've got student email? Where?

If you're asking this question, you're probably at a middle school or elementary school, since all five high schools have student email. If you wish to get email accounts for students in your club or classroom, contact the Technology Resource Teacher or LAN Service Technician at the high school in your feeder pattern for details (see below). Please do not request accounts unless they're going to be used!

The Law . . .
  • Student email is provided as a service by the county for educational use. By law, no other email service can be used within the FCPS system by anyone. Many are blocked anyway.
  • The signing and understanding of an Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) contract is required of every student using email.
  • The student email system has an automatic content scanner much like the one that handles adult email in FCPS. Distribution of prurient material, harassment, and other violations may carry legal penalties beyond the stipulations of an AUP.

The Flat Stanley ProjectThe Flat Stanley Project

Who is Flat Stanley? A lovable character from author Jeff Brown whose adventures have started a new way to read, write and share information with others. For primary students, gathering and reading information on the Internet is, at best, difficult because of the readability factor. The Flat Stanley Project was established to assist primary students in locating information about other cultures and sharing this information with each other. This project incorporates the use of the Internet by using student/teacher e-mail to gather information and share with participating classrooms. At present, I have several teachers involved in this project. If you would like more information about this project you may contact me: Guyanne Vaughan at gvaughan@fayette.k12.ky.us.
