In future editions...of TIPS, you'll find examples of technology integration taken right from the classrooms of Fayette County.  New examples will appear in our November issue, but, for now, here is an assortment of offerings from the past pages of TIPS. If you would like help with any of these ideas, feel free to contact your school's technology resource teacher (TRT), if there is one, or the TRT assigned to your school by the Office of Educational Technology (a list is at right, with links to their support websites). Leestown Students Know Where They're Going (October 2003) Leestown Students Using GPS Units"Students in Mr. Gay’s 6th grade Social Studies class at Leestown Middle School learned about one of the hottest “gadgets” on the market today, GPS units. Then they had the opportunity to use the units for a scavenger hunt on the school grounds. GPS stands for Global Positioning System which is a system of 24 satellites that orbit the earth and transmit data to GPS units in order to determine precise locations...."(...more...)
Bonnie Orthmeyer's Linlee First Graders Look at Plants (December 2003) "...The first grade students at Linlee are studying the parts of a plant and what they need to survive. Mrs. Orthmeyer wanted to show the students how celery has veins that allow the water and nutrients to travel up the stem. She Microsope image that children view on television.began by showing the students the celery under the microscope. She had this connected to her TV through the use of the scan converter. She then took a picture of the celery on the microscope and placed the celery into a cup of water with food coloring for them to review later...."(...more...)
A Digital ABC Book! (January 2004) "The Early Start classes at James Lane Allen were busy in October and November, creating their very own digital ABC book. Ms. O'Connell's morning and afternoon Early Start James Lane Allen early start student with his letter students began their project by making ABC posters, one for each letter of the alphabet. Using the digital camera, each student in the class had their picture made holding one of the letters. They then recorded a sentence about their letter on the computer. For example, "A is for apple." The afternoon class was also recorded singing the ABC song...."(...more...)
Fourth Graders Show What They Know About Kentucky Regions (March 2004) Website on the regions of Kentucky"Two fourth grade classes at Cassidy Elementary and The Academy at Lexington have recently been studying about the regions of Kentucky.  As a culmination to their unit of study, these classes created websites to publish some of the information they had learned about Kentucky...."(...more...)
Journey North (May 2004) Graphs and Clues"Could you figure out a mystery city given a series of sunrise and sunset times, data to calculate the longitude and a couple of clues? Glendover 4th and 5th Grade ESL students are doing just that with some guidance from their teacher, Mrs. Snyder. They are participating in an investigation sponsored by Journey North, a website that helps students gain a better understanding of the world around them and how it changes daily. Mrs. Snyder's ESL students were one of the 21 classes in the 5th grade across the US that figured out all the mystery cities (and the only one in KY)...."(...more...)
