In future editions...of TIPS, you'll find examples of
technology integration taken right from the
classrooms of
Fayette County. New
examples will appear in our November issue, but, for now,
here is an assortment of offerings from the past pages of
TIPS. If you would like help with any of these ideas, feel free to
contact your school's technology resource teacher (TRT), if there is
one, or the TRT assigned to your school by the Office of
Educational Technology (a list is at right, with links to their
support websites). Let us know how we can help!

Leestown Students Know Where They're Going
(October
2003) |
"Students
in Mr. Gay’s 6th grade Social Studies class at Leestown Middle School
learned about one of the hottest “gadgets” on the market today, GPS
units. Then they had the opportunity to use the units for a scavenger hunt
on the school grounds. GPS stands for Global Positioning System which is a
system of 24 satellites that orbit the earth and transmit data to GPS units
in order to determine precise locations...."(...more...) |
| Bonnie Orthmeyer's Linlee First Graders
Look at Plants (December
2003) |
"...The first grade
students at Linlee are studying the parts of a plant and what they
need to survive. Mrs. Orthmeyer wanted to show the students how
celery has veins that allow the water and nutrients to travel up the
stem. She
began
by showing the students the celery under the microscope. She had
this connected to her TV through the use of the scan converter. She
then took a picture of the celery on the microscope and placed the
celery into a cup of water with food coloring for them to review
later...."(...more...) |
| A Digital ABC Book! (January
2004) |
"The
Early Start classes at James Lane Allen were busy in October and November,
creating their very own digital ABC book. Ms. O'Connell's morning and
afternoon Early Start
students began their project by making ABC posters,
one for each letter of the alphabet. Using the digital camera, each student
in the class had their picture made holding one of the letters. They then
recorded a sentence about their letter on the computer. For example,
"A is for apple." The afternoon class was also recorded singing
the ABC song...."(...more...) |

| Journey North (May
2004) |
"Could
you figure out a mystery city given a series of sunrise and sunset
times, data to calculate the longitude and a couple of clues?
Glendover 4th and 5th Grade ESL students are doing just that with
some guidance from their teacher, Mrs. Snyder. They are
participating in an investigation sponsored by Journey North, a
website that helps students gain a better understanding of the world
around them and how it changes daily. Mrs.
Snyder's ESL students were one of the 21
classes in the 5th grade across the US that figured
out all the mystery cities (and the only one in KY)...."(...more...) |
