STLP Regional Showcase Results
Congratulations to all our students and STLP groups
who participated in the regional showcase on November 11th at the
University of Kentucky. Several students and groups were selected to
compete at the state level in March. Check out the results on the
FCPS STLP website.
Yates STLP's Troop Round Up!
Yates STLs have been active in supporting our troops.
Rebecca Skaggs, STLP co-coordinator described this project as a first.
Rebecca wrote, "I wanted to send you a photo of us our first successful
Troop Round Up. We allowed the STLP students to donate items to send
overseas to our US Troops and were able to donate 301 items! Then we sent
the challenge out to the rest of the school to beat
us…well they did, but
the best part was the school was able to accumulate 1,035 items!! So, the
STLP students were just happy that we were able to gather so many useful
items to send over to our deserving troops. As if that was not great
enough, we were able to donate the items in person to First Class Sergeant
Bell, Heather Bell’s husband. We learned upon meeting him that he is soon
to be shipped back out for a 2 year term of duty in Iraq. The students got
to introduce themselves and ask him any questions they had. It was quite
impressive and several students said it was nice to get to meet one of the
people that would benefit from their hard work and donations."
P. L.
Dunbar Students at Work in the School Community
P.L. Dunbar STLs (Brett,
Jesse, Zack, Michael, David, Hesan, and Vishnu) along with their STLP
sponsor, Jim Adams, assisted David Beaty, Technology Resource Teacher at
Edythe J. Hayes Middle School, in installing the new computer equipment
located at Edythe J. Hayes Middle School. The PLD students were very
impressed with the technology at Edythe J. Hayes Middle School. Mr.
Beaty had this to say about the event, "Mr.
Adams sent out a group of AWESOME STLP students to help get machines
online. They set up machines, got them ready for imaging, and were all
around a great group!"
These students
are part of the larger STLP community service group at P. L. Dunbar who
have assisted Beaumont Middle, Johnson Elementary, Garden Spring
Elementary, and Stonewall Elementary schools this year. Plans have been
made to assist Edythe J. Hayes Middle School and the YWCA later in the
year.
Jessie Clark STLs get into the
election business
The Jessie Clark STLs ran the November 1st
election held at JCMS using the on-line voter site FCPS has created.
Members of the Morning News Team STLP hosted a Mock Election for Jessie
Clark Middle School students. The week prior to voting the members of the
team videotaped fellow students posing as the 5 candidates for President.
Each morning, they aired one of the candidates on the morning news show.
On November 1st, voting machines (computers) had been set up in the
library but some technical difficulties occurred just as the polls opened
at 8:00. Paper ballots were used until the issues could be worked out. A
schedule had been made up of when students were to be present in the
library to act as "voting officials". There were 9 precincts set up and a
voting official presided over each precinct asking voters to sign in, vote
and then each voter received an official "I Voted" sticker. At 1:10 a
special news show was aired to update the student body on the election.
This show also included taped interviews with students about the
importance of voting and their views about the candidates. The polls
closed at 3:00 and votes were tallied. A special show aired at the end of
the day telling students the election results at Jessie Clark. The STLP
at Jessie Clark is also creating a Character Education simulation that will serve
as a companion to our Character Education emphasis at Jessie Clark. STLPs
will share the program with the faculty in November and will offer it as a
supplement available to everyone to begin using to teach more about the
Character attributes.
