Your View of the News

http://teach.fcps.net/news/

In case you've missed it...Your View of the News is a website which supports newspapers, current events, and student writing in an online interactive environment. Quoting from the site...

"Making sense of the news is often difficult for adults and students to do. We each have a different perspective on the events of the day based on our own experiences, values and understanding of the world around us. This website is designed to give students ready access to a variety of sources of information on the happenings in their community, country and world. It is also designed to provide students a forum for sharing their reactions and reflections on the events of the world. Students are encouraged to read articles from various sources provided and share their thoughts with other students around the world..."

Each month TIPS will be featuring reactions to news stories by students which have been posted on "Your View of the News." For help with using this resource in your classroom, look at this tutorial, or contact your TRT.

Mars Up-Close
This article was very interesting because you don’t see Mars that close very often. It’s a once in a lifetime experience and not very many people will see it. Tonight, I will try to see Mars through my telescope. I have set my clock for 3:00AM so I can see Mars. If I don’t see it I may look again at 5:51AM Mars has dry riverbeds, polar ice caps and mountains. Scientists believe that there might have been living organisms on Mars because they think there used to be water there. I learned that Mars and Earth will be this close again in 284 years instead of 60,000 years.

U.S. Kids Urged To Help Afghan Children
I agree with President George W. Bush when he says that every American child should contribute a dollar to the Afghan children. The money is a fund to buy food and medicine for the Afghan children. I agree because they are suffering more than they need to from sickness and starvation.
Literary Book Club

Welcome back to a new school year! The Literary Book Club is beginning its fifth year of use and is in full operation as long as our servers hold out. Last year was a resounding success despite being offline for the first semester. We would like to continue the work all of the classes started and continue to grow. Here are some interesting participation statistics from January to June of 2003:
  • Registered Teachers: 106
  • Registered Students: 1093 (Primary 555 Intermediate 340 Middle 166 High 32)
  • Registered Classes: 123
  • Approved Reviews: 243
  • Reviews Read: 2540
  • Participating Schools: 37

The beginning of this year we have a little "housecleaning" to do. Because many of our students are no longer in the same class, we will be removing all of them from classes. They will still be registered and can use their same username and password from last year, but cannot currently submit new reviews. A student who was enrolled last year just needs to choose a new teacher and class for this year and they can continue to submit. They may want to update their personal information as well. If you have students who enjoyed using the LBC last year, please encourage their new teachers to sign up their classes, so they may continue to submit.

We have also cleaned the uncompleted and unapproved reviews from our database. If you have any questions or need help in using this project you may contact Adam Brewer, Project Coordinator - abrewer@fayette.k12.ky.us - or see your school's Technology Resource Teacher.
