What's an STL? STL stands for Student Technology
Leader. These are students in your school who provide leadership
in the area of technology. Hopefully, these students actively
participate in the Student Technology Leadership Program at your school.
If not, they should be!
What types of projects are already underway for the
year? Here are just a few:
-
Tates Creek Middle STLs emailed all their teaching
staff with an offer to create business cards for them. Many
teachers took the students up on their offer. The teachers
provided the basic information they wanted on their business card, and
the students took it from there! Design layout, colors, font
type and size - these were the decisions the students made while using
Publisher software to create the cards. The students provide
this service free to their teachers as a way of thanking the teachers
for all they do each day.
-
Eastside STLs are digging into Flash software this
year. Eastside students are staying after school to learn how to
best use this software and how it can be used on their school's
website. Keep an eye out for changes to their website.
-
Henry Clay STLs and Breckinridge STLs are forming a
new partnership. During the school year, the high school
students will come to Breckinridge on a periodic basis to teach the
elementary students how to do some technical support for their school.
Installing additional memory will be one of their first tasks to
learn. This is a great example of multi-age collaboration.
-
Yates STLs now include the T.U.T.'s (Tots Using
Technology). The T.U.T. students are from the lower
primary level and are learning many basic technology skills.
This strong foundation will enable them to be leaders in their schools
very soon!
-
Beaumont and
P. L. Dunbar STLP are working
together this year! Beaumont STLs have met after school weekly with
the Dunbar
STLP on Tuesdays. They have learned about
different computer parts and functions. They have also worked on troubleshooting
school technical problems.
Beaumont STL students have been able to
observe the P. L. Dunbar students replace hard drives and solve other hardware
issues. Beaumont students loved helping string cable through the ceilings
to add network access to more locations.
The Dunbar students showed Beaumont
STLP how to crimp the cables to add the ends. Adam uses the SmartBoard
to teach about computer maintenance. Beaumont and P.L. Dunbar students observe
the wiring closet.
