Read and Write GoldWe are all concerned with how ALL students in our schools perform on KCCT tests and other forms of achievement. Utilizing technology is one step that helps level the playing field for some students to perform better on those tests. It is apparent as we try to implement Read and Write Gold 6© throughout Fayette County that we are encountering some problems. Some of these are fixable and some are not so easy to fix.

Technology not ready—Some of our schools do not have hardware available for students which support the software. It is a memory hog (it has an 180,000 word dictionary, Tru-voice©, and other options that require a lot of computer power). Schools must place capable computers in places where there is a need.

Staff not ready—Training is a slow process. Special education has trained about 200 staff members throughout Fayette County this year. They are not the only ones that can train. The TRTs and the STCs have also trained within their buildings.

Scanning—All textbooks shall be available in digital form as required by law starting July 2004 (starting with new adoption cycle), so this problem will eventually resolve itself.

If there are other issues or questions please feel free to let me know and I will help to answer them. Please help ALL students succeed and do their best.
