TIPS from the Pros
As a reflection of our Internet Resources, all of this month's Tips are from the TRT web pages! This is just a sample...see what we've got!

From Barbara Bar's 1/9/03 newsletter...:

INCREDIBLE SNOWFLAKES

http://www3.ns.sympatico.ca/dstredulinsky/

Upper elementary, teachers and parents:  Want to make the world's most gorgeous snowflakes?  Would you like to make creating snowflakes a more challenging and educational activity for your students?  A very special thanks to Jana Koehler (Co-PSA at Lansdowne) for sharing this wonderful site with me.

From Joy Buckingham's Computer How-To's...:

To copy and paste a picture (graphic) from the Internet or another document

1. Position mouse on top of picture.

2. Right click

3. Copy

4. Go to document where the picture (graphic)  is to be pasted

5. You have 3 different ways you can paste...choose 1 of the following that works best for you:

    a. Right click mouse and paste

    b. Click on the clipboard icon on the toolbar.  The sticky will say "Paste"

    c.  Keyboard short cut:  hold the ctrl button and hit the "V" key.

From Amy Johns Weekly Tech Tips...:

This is a great way to create personalized distribution lists when you are consistently sending email to a specific group of people.

  • Click on File on the main menu bar (not inside an email message), then New, and then Distribution List. (You may have to click on the arrow at the bottom of the list in order to see it.)
  • Where it says Name:, type a name for the group you are creating. (Ex: PD Committee)
  • Click on Selecct Members... to add people who are in the global distribution list. (In other words they are part of the state system.) You can add as many as you like.
  • To add folks who are not in the global distribution system (like parents), then click on Add New... Where it says Display Name, type the person's name. Where it says Email Address, type their complete address (ex: mom@aol.com) If you also want to add this person to your contacts list, then click the checkbox next to Contacts. Then click OK.
  • Once you are finished adding names, click on Save and Close.
  • Now when you are ready to send an email to this group, just open a new message, click on To:, then change Global Address List to Contacts. (It is at the very bottom of the list.) You will then see your contacts and distribution list. Double click on the one you want, and then click OK.

This is a great way to make better use of your time when you have to send email to a group!

From Kim Overstreet's Tip of the Week...:

If you have need to cc someone on an email that you are sending, but you don't want others receiving the email to know that this other person will be getting it to, you can BCC them. BCC stands for Blind Carbon Copy.

This also comes in handy when you are emailing class news out to parents, but you don't want all of the parent's email addresses showing for everyone to see. Put them all in the BCC field

Here's how:

  • Open the message that you want to send
  • Click on View
  • Click on BCC Field (you may have to expand the menu to see it--do this by either waiting a few seconds, or clicking on the arrows at the bottom of the menu.)
  • Then type the name of the secret recipients in the BCC field.

The question I've had before when doing this was that if someone were to reply to all, would it go to the people that were BCC'ed? And the answer is no. Your recipients can only reply to you and those who are in the TO or CC field, but not to anyone who was Blind Carbon Copied.
