Dear Fourth Graders,

I am writing to you because I am  studying Kentucky. I heard that you lived in Eastern Coal Fields.

I live in the Blue Grass. Yet we don't have Blue Grass. There are grass seeds that when the wind blows the grass appears to be blue. That is the story of the Blue Grass.

Now I want to tell you about 2 places.

Number one is Fort Boonesborough it is very neat and it is square shaped. And it has little square shaped gun holes to shoot the Indians. Fort Boonesborough is located near the Kentucky River and there is  sand on one side. At Fort Boonesborough they have blacksmiths and we saw a video on  Daniel Boone.

Number 2 Fort Harrod. I have not seen the whole thing yet but I have seen the front of it. The neatest thing about it is it has the only orange tree in the state.

Now I want to know something about your region. Where do you like to go on field trips? What is your region like? Do you have a lot of homework?

I am anxious to hear from you.

Your e-pal

Here are the responses sent by the students of Mrs. Hatfield's 4th grade class of Bevins Elementary in Pike County. Dear_______ ,

My name is ______. I live in the Eastern Mountains Coalfields, which is part of the eastern part of Kentucky. I have two teachers their names are Mrs. Hatfield and Mrs. Soto. Mrs. Hatfield is my  homeroom teacher. I love her class a lot because we get to write fictional stories, but I think the Mountains are more fun than school.

There are four things I like about the mountains. The first thing is when it snows it sticks. It's terrific for sledding. The next thing the mountains hold in all the winds that cause Tornados. In the summertime it is not too hot and not too cold.  The best thing is the Mountain Art Center! They show tons of plays. They even show Rumplestiltskin! Do you have any place to go see plays where you live?

Dear________ ,

Hi my name is_______. I go to Bevins Elementary. I have two teachers Mrs. Soto and Mrs. Hatfield. Mrs. Hatfield is my homeroom teacher. She doesn't give to much homework. We are in the East. The farthest East from Fayette County. We have a place called The Mountain Art Center. I have saw lots of good plays there. We also have beautiful mountains in our region They protect us from storms and high winds. We have a lot of coal in the East. In the mines there are a few accidents. Rocks fall and people get hurt. There's also another problem. People are getting laid off and that isn't good at all. That means less jobs for our region. I would like to know more about you and your region. How many teachers do you have? Are they nice?

Dear_____ ,

Hi, I'm _____and I am in the fourth grade. I have two  teachers Mrs. Hatfield and Mrs. Soto. I am in Mrs. Hatfields  homeroom.

One thing about my region is we have tall mountains and they block off tornados. When it snows most of the snow melts if it's not on the mountain.

One of the most important things is our coal mines. We have alot of coal which means we have alot of coal mines. Most of the kids dad's in my room work in the coal mines.

My favorite place to go on field trips is the Mountain Arts Center. They have plays. Sometimes they even have concerts.

Dear _____,

Hi my name is ______and as you know I'm in the 4th grade. I'm only 9 years old because I was born on the dead line Oct. 1st. I live in the Eastern part of Kentucky we are known as the Coal Field state.

I go to Bevins Elementary School. What is the name of your school? You wanted to know what is my favorite field trip. It is the Mountain Art Center. It is a theater in Prestongsburg which is not far from our school.

What I like about school is that we have great teachers-like mine Ms. Hatfeild and Ms. Soto. How are your teachers?

What I like about the Eastern part of Kentucky is that we have beautiful mountains. Climbing them is hard and sometimes it is scary.

I'll hope you will write to us again.
