Bold Words

Activity: Before class begins, teacher will create a Word document possibly information from an internet site related to the social studies or science unit being studied. In class computer center or lab student opens the word document.

(Note these will be "read only" documents because more than one person is opening the document. Doesn't matter because the student will need to save the document with their own name for future assessment.).

Students highlight and bold the words that give the main ideas of the sentences and paragraphs.

*Hint: Have students to keep in mind, if they wanted someone else to scan over the material the bold words would give the reader the main idea of the piece.

Assessment: Student either prints or saves documents for teacher to assess work.

Extension/Enrichment: Students choose information from teacher selected sites (about units being studied), copy and paste into a Word document and bold important words for purpose of scanning.
