This lesson is designed to introduce students to Julius Caesar.
Pre-Reading Activity
Teacher conducts a class discussion to determine what students know about Julius Caesar. She records this information on the blackboard, in Word or in Inspiration. After conducting the discussion teacher is to read aloud a passage about Julius Caesar.
During Reading
Students may complete the activity individually, in pairs or in small groups. Students are given an excel spreadsheet in the form of an Alpha Box. Students are to read the information given to them on Julius Caesar. Websites are included or print material may be provided. Students are to identify one word that begins with each letter of the alphabet that is relevant to Julius Caesar and his life.
After Reading
Once students have completed their Alpha Box they are to use the words to create a summary of what they have read. They will orally present this summary to the class. Teacher may require a written paragraph which contains a minimum amount of words from the Alpha Box.
NOTE This activity can be adapted and used with any topic. Teachers can do this activity with online reading material or print material they give to students.
