This activity focuses on student comprehension of Latin root words and English derivatives. The teacher discusses Latin root words and their meaning with the class.  Teacher models how to find English derivatives in an online dictionary. 

Students are then given an Excel spreadsheet to organize information about 10 Latin root words and their English derivatives.  The spreadsheet will include Latin root words and their meaning, English derivatives and their part of speech and the definition for each English derivative.

An optional component is for students to locate or create illustrations for the English derivatives.  This would be an excellent way to differntiate instruction based on students learning styles and needs.
