Classroom Literacy Guide Activities

"Reading is a dynamic process in which the reader interacts with the text to construct meaning. Inherent in constructing meaning is the reader's ability to activate prior knowledge, use reading strategies and adapt to the reading situation."

The Classroom Literacy Guide is a rollup of best practices to foster reading as a dynamic process, consistent for all grade levels, that is put into a form useful for instructional planning, self-evaluation, peer-mentorship and staff development. It is the "how to" for a good literacy-based program.

Classroom Climate
In order to develop, maintain and strengthen reading abilities the classroom must be a place in which reading is encouraged.

Before Reading and Writing
Teachers need to employ techniques to foster the independent development of pre-reading behaviors by their students.

During Reading and Writing
Teachers must teach comprehension and fix-up strategies which are essential for constructing meaning while interacting with text.

After Reading and Writing
On the contrary, to obtain a sense of closure, strategic readers engage in the three complementary follow-up behaviors of retelling, summarizing and evaluation.

Skill and Strategy Instruction
Research has found that teachers who produce more learning in students consistently use direct teaching behaviors.

Materials and Tasks of the Lesson
Reading instruction should prepare students to become active, willing lifelong readers.

Teacher Practices
It is essential that the teacher demonstrate appropriate attitudes, actions and interactions that foster the development of all components of the process of reading.
