Social Studies-Based Literacy Activities

Reading has always been a significant component of the Social Studies curriculum. Students read text to discover facts, important events as well as the causes and contributing factors of a variety of issues. Students encounter an enormous amount of factual information within Social Studies. This can result in meaningless and disconnected facts if specific strategies are not taught to assist students in making connections, exploring applications and retaining the information.

The lessons in this section are designed to provide teachers lessons that address literacy by including ways to assist students in organizing, synthesizing and maximizing understanding of core content in Social Studies.
