Students will work together to create and update a website that documents the renovation of the new Arlington building. Students will take pictures, build and maintain a website, and conduct interviews of teachers and students. (STLP Goals 1, 2, 4, 5, and 6) Students will create a bulletin board and take and post pictures of "Super Eagles" throughout the year. (STLP Goals 1, 2, 4, and 6) Melba Leach will be working with 5-10 students creating a school newspaper reporting classroom and school-wide news. Students will become more familiar with MS Word, Publisher and researching items and activities on the Internet. (STLP Goals 1, 2, 4, 5, and 6) Barbara Carter is working with two LEGO Robotics Teams - 6 members in each team: Jr Lego and Lego first. The teams are researching transportation in the community and problems that may arise from that, researching possible solutions via Internet, surveys and interviews. They will present their findings at the competition. They are also designing, and making robots and programming them to move and do simple tasks. The STLP group at Ashland Elementary produces and performs the daily morning news program, "Wake Up Ashland!" The fifth grade STLP students focus on this project. They have taken ownership of the program from creating the script, taking the broadcast, and participating as newscasters. (STLP Goals 1, 2, 4, and 6) The Ashland Times is the Ashland school newspaper. The STLP students write the articles, design the layout, and complete the reporting needed to publish the newspaper. The Beaumont STLP team will be using the Lego Robotics Mindstorm program this year. Students will work together in small groups and learn team building social behaviors. Students’ roles will interchange between teacher and learner as students take responsibility for completion of specific tasks geared toward completion of the larger task - completing of the mission. Students will learn basic programming skills with the software and will create plans for their team’s mission. In addition to planning, the team’s missions will require testing and troubleshooting the instructions to successfully program the robot's movements and behaviors. Several Beaumont teachers and parents have noted that they are willing to help with this program. The Dunbar STLP team (Bulldog Buddies) plans to visit BMS and help our STLP team learn how to use the Mindstorm program. (STLP Goals 1, 2, 3, and 4) The Beaumont STLP will create an Instructional Video based on a digital citizenship topic. To begin saving work in their student STLP folder, I wanted them to design a graphic that will be pressed to a T shirt for them to wear on STLP day. The new 4th graders needed to become acquainted with the location of their personal folder that we use in STLP for all their saved work. Our STLs produce a daily live morning show. This year we are going to "step it up a notch" by using 2 cameras, 2 sets and a lapel mic for more flexibility. The STLs learn how to scan, edit and print the photos onto heat transfer paper. These mouse pads are sold for $6 each to faculty members, students and their families. Now that WAVE news has taken off and become a school hit, we are exploring other possibilities. We have been discussing elements of digital photography and hope to purchase digital cameras that will allow us to capture and promote our students, activities and achievements, and our school as a whole. We are also playing with Digital Art and manipulating photographs. In collaboration with 5th grade teachers, we are writing process pieces on using various forms of technology. 4th and 5th graders are also dabbling in podcasting and digital storytelling. These features may include what is going on in the classrooms, student interests, PTA announcements, community service projects, etc. and highlight a different country each week. We will possibly be committing to the STLP LEGO Robotics this year. I will be receiving coaching training on the equipment and devices. Students will work together in groups to solve problems in a team effort to organize a plan to create a robotic LEGO mechanism to be judged at a later date as they compete against other schools. This will be a fun and educational experience for the students and will also be connected to mathematics and science. (STLP Goals 1, 2, and 4) The STLP will be committing to an early morning show, live, on Friday mornings to give students, faculty, and staff the news and other happenings of the school, community, and world. The students will be able to run some the audio/visual equipment as well. This will help students build social skills and team working skills for the students. This will also help students in public speaking, especially if they have any shy tendencies. (STLP Goals 1, 2, and 4) The STLP may also be creating and printing business cards for the administration, faculty and staff of William Wells Brown. Perhaps if word catches on, we may spread this to the community as well. With the proper approval, these business cards will be sold to the individuals to help with any extra supplies and trips the STLP needs to take part in. The students can take part in leadership skills as well as team building skills. They will use their artistic and graphic communication abilities to create the business cards. (STLP Goals 1, 2, 4, 5, and 6) The STLP will be filming and creating a digital virtual tour of William Wells Brown Elementary School. This will give the community and parents a look inside the building for those who have not seen what WWBE has to offer. This will help parents decide if this is the best school for their children. This will also build leadership and team building skills as the students work with audio/visual equipment and editing equipment. This will also be placed on the school website. (STLP Goals 1, 2, 4, 5, and 6) If time permits, the STLP will be committing to the Internet Safety video contest that will be presented at the STEM fair in March 2010. This will give the students a chance to get other students, administration, faculty and staff involved in bringing out safety aspects of computer and Internet safety to the community.
