State wide essay contest:
"What Problem I see Now That I can Help Change for our Future"

We started the year with this essay on a topic about how we can be like Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and make a change in our future. The goals we addressed were #1, in using the internet to research the various problems the students wrote about was academic and I feel their essays addressed social and emotional growth of each student. Goal #2 was addressed in the fact they took ownership in research, writing and typing these papers which showed leadership. No. 4 goal was in evidence each time a 5th grader helped a 4th grader format, edit, and save their papers. This was a contest sent to us from KDE so I believe this is supporting programs in the Technology Dept on the state and local level.

STLP Print Services
It is a pleasure to serve as the STLP coordinator because I have the privilege of meeting and working with some of Leestown’s finest students. Technology can inspire student expression in ways not possible. Last year’s STLP students embarked on an adventure that took them into the world of business and entrepreneurship titled STLP Print Services. Our product is business cards and greeting cards. The response from the teachers was more than we expected. We entered the entrepreneur division at the Fayette Co. Public School STEM Fair competition and won a mini-video camera. We will meet every Monday after school to plan the week’s activities.

The helpdesk has proved to be a valuable resource to our STLP tech aides, teachers, STC and District Tech.

Teacher also schedule the LCD projector checkout and Computers On Wheels through the helpdesk. STLP creates a weekly calendar from these requests, delivers the equipment, sets it up for use, and retrieves it at the end of the checkout period.

All 6th graders received their first badge free of charge, however replacement badges are $3.00 for everyone. *Free/reduces lunch students receive their first replacement only free/$1.50. STLP monitors the sign up list, takes pictures, downloads and files to the necessary team and creates the badge. Once created all are delivered throughout the day. These badges are also used as Identification at different venues outside of LTMS.

Students will use the paper to document events at our school, inform students about different aspects of our school, and support the community by writing about various charities such as God's Pantry, etc. Students will learn to write for an audience. Some students showed interest in drawing comics to publish in the newspaper. Those students will have to learn to use a scanner so that we can insert their drawings into the newspaper. We plan to sell our newspaper to staff and students so STLP students will also need to market the newspaper by creating flyers, etc. to post around the school. We hope our newspaper will benefit the school by being another source of information for kids and parents. Bulldog Buddies
Bulldog Buddies is a project where our high school STLP students work with elementary and middle school STLP students from around the district. This year our plan is to reach out to other schools through the use of videoconferencing. This helps us to reach the students at a more convenient time so that elementary students aren’t waiting around for our students to get out of school and make it to their school. It also helps us to save gas and be more efficient in our energy use which is part of our “green” focus this year. We have worked with Cardinal Valley, William Wells Brown and have plans to work with Garden Springs and others.
(STLP Goals 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6)

Command Center
Command Center is the current name for Dunbar’s system of controlling all of the school’s computers from a single piece of software. It would allow the remote viewing of the status of all computers in the whole school, or just a lab. This could make network diagnostics – and, to some extent, individual computer diagnostics – far simpler, as the solution could simply be a few clicks of the mouse.
This project is undoubtedly an enormous undertaking; it requires the mapping of the entire school and indexing of all the computers’ information, not to even mention the programming required. Due to this, it was decided that Command Center would be built in something similar to modules, where smaller pieces would first be constructed as standalone, and then added into the whole project. For instance, we are currently working on a server that would allow the client to shut down or turn on several computers simultaneously at certain times (for instance, turn all computers on at 7:30 AM and turn them off at 6:00 PM).
(STLP Goals 1, 2, 4, and 6)

iSchool and iElements
iSchool and iElements are in fact two wholly different systems. iSchool is Fayette County’s Course Management System (CMS) based on the open-source, modular Moodle software. The purpose of iSchool is to bring students together in an online space to allow them to take quizzes, submit homework assignments, and work on projects. It is student-managed and continually updated as ideas are tested on the iSchool beta (development) box.
iElements is also an online system, but it is on just a school-wide scale. It is used to manage the school’s exemptions, which are waivers that allow students to exempt a certain number of final exams based on how well they did on standardized tests. This is a common practice in Fayette County, though usually done solely by pen and paper. This internet-based system allows students to easily manage their exemptions at their convenience.
