Literacy in action: Student technology leaders at the state fair

Eighteen Student Technology Leaders from Arlington, Johnson and Mary Todd Elementary Schools participated in opening day of the Kentucky State Fair on August 16, 2001.

These students experienced "real world" literacy by reading, writing, speaking, listening and viewing. The students had several responsibilities and opportunities while at the fair. Students manned the Kentucky Department of Education's Student Technology Leadership Program (STLP) booth throughout the day. They shared with the public projects that each school did last year as a part of their STLP and about their school being an alternate calendar school.

Other students served as cyber reporters and videographers. These students worked in teams to visit booths throughout the fair, interview the presenters, take notes and pictures (both still and motion digital pictures). These notes were used to write articles that are posted along with pictures on the Kentucky State Fair Cyber Gazette website

Another group of students assisted a presenter in setting up computers for his booth.

When the students were not "on duty", they had the opportunity to explore the state fair — many for the first time. What a great learning opportunity for these students to have outside of their school buildings. Congratulations and thank you to all students and adults involved for positively representing Fayette County Public Schools!

The adults and students involved would like to specifically thank the McDonald's on Newtown Pike and its managers, Donna Davis and Tina Green, for donating dinner for these hard-working students. They truly appreciate the involvement of this community business with their school.
