Fayette County Student Technology Leaders Participate in the 2002 IdeaFestival

Student technology leaders from Mary Todd Elementary School and students from Paul Laurence Dunbar High School's Math, Science, and Technology Program played an integral part in this year's IdeaFestival held recently in downtown Lexington.  One of the highlights of the IdeaFestival was a Deep Time Probe "Launch" on Friday evening, September 20, 2002.  Thirty Fayette County students served as Time Probe Reporters.  The students interviewed people from various walks of life asking them one question: "If you were to communicate with an advanced civilization that possessed the technological ability for time travel what would your communication/question, etc. be?"  The answers were embedded into a laser beam that contained the digital data from all the interviews conducted by our students as well as students from Jessamine and Scott County.

Another group of student technology leaders from Paul Laurence Dunbar attended the actual Deep Time Probe "Launch" on September 20, 2002 and served as videographers.  The students from STLP co-coordinator Camille Clemons' TV production group took video footage of the actual launch as well as interviewed various people attending the launch including the mayor of Lexington, Pam Miller.

Winburn Middle School student technology leaders also participated in the IdeaFestival by attending a session on Time Travel presented by Dr. Brian Green and Dr. Richard Gott, both astrophysicists.  Read more about Winburn's participation in the October TIPS.
