Arlington's Project "Lend a Helping Hand"
Congratulations to Arlington's STLP for a new project just completed.  It was almost entirely student generated and led. Barbara Carter, co-STLP coordinator, described the project during the early stages of implementation:

"Our Highly Skilled Educator, Lewis Willian, has a friend in the Reserves who was sent to Iraq. He sent anArlington STLs collect school supplies for students in Iraq. email back describing the conditions of the students in a school where he is stationed. One of our 4th grade STLP students heard about it and on her own decided we should do something to help. She came to me with her idea. She wanted to put out a box so the students could donate supplies. I said great (with much pride I must admit), and asked if she wanted others to help. She got 2 friends (also STLP students) to help and the project “Lend a Helping Hand” was born. Since that time the entire STLP group has gotten in on the action and they have started a community campaign. They have written letters to teachers, students and parents requesting supplies. They have arranged a pick up schedule with teachers, made flyers for businesses and the school, interviewed Mr. Willian and are in the process of making commercials. With their own money, they have created a contest and are giving an ice cream party to the class who brings the most materials."

Arlington STLs prepare items for shipment to Iraq. Now as the school year ends, here's an update from Ms. Carter:

"The Lend a Helping Hand drive is over and Ms. Griffin and Ms. Beckham have won the ice cream party!! Congrats to them and thanks to all who contributed. They collected 84 items and Ms Abshear’s class was 2nd with 64 items. Way to go, Arlington!  We collected a total of 300 packages of items!!!!!! We have 4 boxes of materials to send to a school in Iraq. We are in contact with Fort Campbell and will be sending those supplies over as soon as we can."
